During my pregnancy I had cravings for anything sweet. I tried curbing my sweet tooth by pinning recipes on Pinterest. I was obsessed but all it did was made me hungrier for sweets. So, I decided I would make my own sweets but healthier.
The key is decrease the amount of processed sugar, saturated fats, and carbohydrates. By increasing slower glycemic rise alternatives and protein such as, coconut sugar, ground flax, hemp seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, dark cocoa, coconut flour, coconut oil, vegetable oil, whole wheat flour, beans, veggies, nuts, and puréed fruit.
Yes, they may not be as tasty as the actual decadent pin but it helps with cravings. As you know, store bought treats have so many additives that it is hard to know what you’re eating. Don’t be fooled by their marketing ploys!!
Obviously, just because the treat may be better for you does not mean you can devour it all. Everything in moderation! Don’t get me wrong, it may be healthier but it won’t void you from having elevated sugars. Your sugars will rise no matter what you eat but it depends on how high. A slight rise isn’t as bad as a huge increase. You do not want to consume anything that will make you crash because of the processed sugar spike. A gradual rise is not as harmful.
In combination of diet and exercise you can control the diabetes dragon. Exercise doesn’t always mean the gym. It can be parking farther from the store to walk or taking the stairs instead of elevator etc. be creative so you get some kind of activity in your day.
The key is not to be hard on yourself. Being kind and compassionate will help you fight the diabetes dragon. Please note, that these are just my thoughts and I am in no way a doctor or a dietician. These are just some ways I’ve been able to manage my health and I thought it would be helpful to share with you all.
